98 Intrigue Shifting Problems Sign In

I have a 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue and can't get it out of park. I turn the car on and I can't push the button in on the shifter to shift out fo park. If anyone knows what to do about this i would really appreciate it.

I've have seen this problem before in other vehicles. The shifter is made to lock until the brake pedal is pressed, most cases there's a cable or some kind of linkage that goes from the brake pedal to the shifter, its a child saftey set-up. And other cases it could be in the key ignition assembly itself if the shifter is on the coloum. Maybe this might help you some.

Yes dave284. Check if the brake lights work. Many if not most sense the brake light switch to lights and on to whatever electrically controlled locking device. Most are a problem with the brake light switch and not other items involved,

How do i find these cables or linkages that could be connected from my break pedal to the shifter? Or if anyone knows how to take the cover off of the shifter in the 98 Oldsmobile Intrigue please let me know.
