98 Wrangler Wont start.... Sign In

Hi all, here goes my story.

Replaced thermostat for overheating problem. Took it out on a test, no problem, pinned the gas oil appears to have shot out of dipstick all over engine (I had almost certainly had too much oil in my car because of an ongoing leak).

Car struggled to make it home, seemed to be losing power on the accelerator. Gave the engine a wash down with degreaser and hose...

Took it back out, after 2 miles you start hearing a loud clicking when hitting the accelerator, and it progressively gets bad. Barely made it home as you would really have to push the gas to get it to go.

Now, the car sits idle in my driveway.. Won't start, it cranks, can get it to akwardly run for a few seconds when holding the accelerator... At that point it smokes, and literally shoots the dipstick out of the engine. Here is a video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0V6t6EK0wEs

Since then have had 2 mechanics look at it. #1 probably ruined the spark plugs, and have an ignition problem. Replace spark plugs, fuel injectors, fuel line. #2 Motor flooded with gas, entire motor needs to be replaced (I looked at him cockeyed, googled all over never heard of a flooded engine causing an entire replacement).

So now I am asking you fine folks for your thoughts.

Sounds like it has no compression on a few cylinders.

How much oil is in the crankcase? You must have some major blow by to push the dipstick out of the tube.

You need to do a cylinder leak down test.

Will pick up a gauge and run a test later.

What would be the outcome of no compression in terms of repairs?

What does the oil look like?

Major thing is to find out if the crankcase is over full. It could be full of gasoline and oil or coolant and oil.

Or water.... When I was first trouble shooting the problem, I had noticed what I believe is the cvc valve was basically shoved in the case with electrical tape on the end.. Not my handywork. I had since replaced the valve but not luck. Possible water had gotten in there.

I will check later, am at work now.

You definitely need to determine if the crankcase is overfull and if the oil is contaminated with gasoline or coolant before going any further.

Took a wiff of the oil on the dipstick, definitely can smell gas on it.

The fuel could be in the oil because you have been cranking on it or you could have a stuck open fuel injector.

You should remove the ASD relay and then perform a compression test. If the crankcase is way over full, you need to drain the oil and change the filter. Then add 5 quarts 5w-30.
