I would like to change the tranny fluid on my Sable but I can't find the drain plug.
Where is it located on this vehicle?? Any help would be greatly appreciated - thanks.

There is no drain plug. You need to remove the transmission pan. So be sure you have a large pan to catch all the fluid. Good luck.

Sounds like a challenge. Are there any tricks to doing this other than just
removing the pans screws and letting it "leak" out?? I assume there is a gasket
on the pan - should that be changed or is it OK to just put the old one
back on? BTW your expertise is really appreciated.

you have to prepare your mind and garage for a very messy job.

i have found a way for me that seems to work to help control the mass dumping of tranny fluid.
i crack loose all the pan bolts then only remove half of them so the pan can just hang slightly off the transmission.
then use i turkey baster suck out the fluid.........its a little time consuming but its better then taking a bath in it.

i would take the time to replace the gasket if available (some have reusable gaskets depends on the app) you would hate to have do this twice for a leaky gasket.

Ok here is how I do it. Remove all the screws except for the four corner screws. Then loosen two screws on one end of the pan, but don't take them all the way out. About half way. Fluid should start to leak out at this point. After the fluid slow or stops, loosen the other two bolts that you have not touched yet on the other end of the pan. Only loosen them a couple of turns. More fluid should come out. Now remove one of the screws that you have half way out. More fluid. Now the other screw that is half way out. More fluid. Now pull the pan down a bit with the other two crews still in. It may be nesissary to loosen the other two screws at this point to give enough room to pull down pan. Now hold the pan with one hand and remove remaining two screws. You will need to replace the gasket unless it is a reusable type. The reusable type will have metal inserts in the screw holes.
