99 Pontiac Sunfire - Cannot Remove Key

Recently purchased a '99 Pontiac Sunfire GT Convertible - Automatic. Now having problems 1) getting the key to the lock position and then 2) removing the key. The engine turns off, but the dash warning lights, etc. remain on. This is draining my battery. Has anyone experienced a similar problem? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

There is a system that prevents you from locking the steering wheel without being in Park but I thought the dash lights would go out.
You could start by seeing how it works at the shifter and if something is broken. My guess it used a solonoid over to the ignition switch insead of a cable or rods to get there. You may need to disconnect battery for now to prevent a dead battery until this headache is taken care of. Let us know what you find out, T
