I own a 1999 Ford Taurus, 3.0 V-6, VIN U, 230,000 miles.
Recently the temp gauge has been reading high, not on the "H" but not too far away. Both of the engine fans kick in but as long as the car is standing still, the gauge stays high, if I drive half a block or so, I can watch the gauge drop to almost half where it belongs. I had the system pressure tested, no leaks, and they put a new cap on the overflow bottle. It does not boil over or act like its hot.
Could this be the thermostat, it's around 5 years old, or maybe the sending unit for the gauge?
I've owned this car for 7 years and never saw the gauge go above half way. When I start the car cold and drive, the gauge rises very quickly, too quickly in my opinion.
Any help would be appreciated.

Use a laser thermometer a the thermostat housing to determine what the real temp is to find out if you have a gauge issue or not.

I wound up taking it to a radiator shop and he replaced the radiator and the impeller was worn off of the water pump so that was replaced also. Also new thermostat and system flush, the coolant looked like mud.
Thanks for the reply, just wanted to let folks know how it turned out, :)

Thank you for posting the solution. I've seen a number of Tauruses with that issue now.
