Hi,I recently bought a 2013 Honda Accord Sport and the car came with 225/45R18 tires. I was told that I can down size the rim for winter and everything would be okay, I ended up buying 235/60R17S ..but when I put on the new rim I noticed that the nuts did not tighten all the way on the bolts. Also when i tightened it as much as possible and lowered the car the wheel made a cracking noise and I saw a bit of smoke coming from the nut. I quickly switched the rim back to the original.Has anyone ever had this problem? Can it be fixed by buying another set of nuts that are bigger than the ones that came with the car?

Sounds like you have the wrong lug nuts for the new wheels.
I don't know who told you that you could substitute that tire size but they certainly didn't know what they were talking about. Those tires are not interchangeable.

so would you say my only option would be to sell the winter tires and rims and buy new ones ?

Yes, I would. Those tires are not an acceptable size for your car. They are much taller than your tire. I assume you are changing all four here, not just two. All four need to match.

Just 2 cents for "roacher" : If new to the snow tire game just don't expect them to behave as well for clear and dry roads for handling like the ones that came with it. Real M/S tires do not state treadwear ratings TMK none do. They are for the specific need and extremes. Do get them off to save them when season is over to save them as they plain do wear out faster on dry road and less effective of course next season,
