Hopefully im not beating a dead horse, I briefly searched first. What do you guys think of this pc based software. I bought the standard version after doing research. Its very limited without enhance, but, is enhanced as cool as the youtube videos make it look? I know OTC and Snap On have some legit products but the thing that sold me was the PC base. I have a Matco scan tool and I hate that thing. Its a pain to navigate because you have a little screen and each button has about 200 uses.

That particular company makes some decent software but i don't know about you but I'm not dragging my laptop around the shop and balancing it on fenders while i work on a car. They aren't designed for that environment. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

That's the way a lot of the Scan tool hardware is going HT. I'm using the Master Tech VCI system; it's labtop based and wireless. And I think that's the key to keeping the labtop safe is wireless; no cords to trip on. I can be 500 yards away from the vehicle and still communicate with it. I have a rolling tool cart for each of us here in the shop and that's where the labtop goes when it's in use; there or on the seat of the vehicle on a road test. The large screen of the labtop is also a bonus during a road test. The one thing I didn't think of when buying this system, is that the techs now also have all the repair information right at the vehicle. No more running back and forth to the shop desk top computer. Is there a chance of the labtop becoming damaged, yes; but the benefits and time savings out way that. Dan. Canadian "EH"

Yeah, I can see practical uses for that for some techs but if you're the guy bouncing all over the shop and out in the parking lot, you really need something more portable in addition to that.

A buddy of mine is using tablets in his shop; it has some kind of rubber case wrapped around it. Might make a little more bounce proof??? Dan. Canadian "EH"

Im with HT. I use my laptop for mitchell and parts, no diag software, and still I managed to slide it off the front of a car and crack it. Its nice to have right there for wiring diagrams, since sometimes when printed they are not legible. One of those carts would be nice, but I plan on using a dedicated scan tool. I am considering one of those windows 8 tablet/laptop combos, but I would invest in a good case. ____________________________________________________ Willing to help, willing to learn... Rob

Yeah, I guess the tablet would be more practical.

Thats basically what a Verus is aside from having the scope on it. You can hook up with Mitchell/ ShopStream, Alldata, Identifix without leaving the car. On the heavy-duty side pretty much everything went to laptop. Detroit DDEC, CAT ET, Cummins Insite and Navistar went to subscription service and the only real good way to get info and read the codes and data is to load it into a laptop. Convinced the bosses at the last shop to finally get a Toughbook from Noregon that had the scanning program but then they wouldn't get the subscriptions to the info system so rendered their $5000 system pretty much useless. It was a glorified code reader without the info systems. I'm sure eventually we'll be seeing the Tech2, IDS and a host of others moving to a subscription software service and use adapter plugs for the laptop. Not sure how they will work around hacking issues though. Personally I prefer scan tools like my Modis or HT's Solus Pro. I can put the Modis in a dedicated cart with a large screen if I wish, but its much easier to take on a road test or set under the hood. If it falls, it seems a bit more armored to take the hit though obviously anything can break.
