Bad fuel mileage f150

I have a f150 with 208kms. 4x4 with a 302 5.0L. I just bought this truck and it has been very well maintained by the dealer since new. 1995. I am getting horrible fuel mileage with it, 250kms to 60L approx 150miles to 18gal. I have had 4 of these trucks before and know that they can get twice as good mileage. Air filter is clean and plugs are new. Truck runs great but the fuel is killing me. There is a tiny leak in the exaust manifold but dont think its enough to give such poor fuel mileage. Is there anything else I can check before being made flat broke at the mechanic. I know a little bit about fixing trucks and can usually get by with what I know but this one has me stumped. Any help would be great. Thanks.

10 mpg is a bit low for a 4x4 in town driving. So many things to consider; Type of tires. When I run my 33X12.50 snow tires, I lose about 3mpg. Inflation; Make sure the tire pressures are at/near max. Your ride won't be so good, but will help with fuel economy. Watch the center of the tires. If they start to wear prematurely, lower the pressure. Since this is pre-96, you have OBD I, which won't trigger a CEL if it's overfueling. Make sure the engine is running at proper temp. 200-220F is ideal. (195F thermostat). At prolonged freeway speeds, with everything good in the world, I'd expect somewhere in the neighborhood of 18mpg. Rear end gear ratio; That can be a big factor in fuel economy. I had a 94 F150 4X4 with 3.55:1. Without the snows, I'd get around 20mpg on the freeway. About 12mpg in town. To find out for sure, have an exhaust gas analyzer run on your truck. That will show if you are running efficiently. You should see/expect 14% CO2 or better. The higher the CO2, the more efficient your engine is running. It will also show CO and air/fuel mix. Perfect A/F is 14.7:1. Loren SW Washington
