Brakes engage while driving Sign In

I have 2006 explorer 4x4 xlt 4.6. While im driving my brakes engage but only while im turning or coming out of a turn and the brake pedal becomes difficult to press. There are no lights on on the dash, allthough the advance trac light will come on for a few seconds. When i disable the the advance trac, by holding the button down, the problem will go away but i can hear and feel grinding. I have replaced the front driverside wheel hub assembly because i was told that i had a bad wheel bearing and it was causing the ABS to engage. The tone rings seem to be intact and i recently replaced the front brake pads.

Is it possible that you twisted the flex brake hose when putting the caliper back on.

Re: Brakes engage while driving Sign In

Could what's happening here possibly be the ABS activating?

Re: Brakes engage while driving Sign In

Are all the wheels the same size? Was there any work done prior to this problem?

Re: Brakes engage while driving Sign In

You should have a shop scan it to see if there are any ABS codes stored. You'll need to take it to a shop or someone that has the scan tool that can access the ABS control module.

Are the pedals adjusted all the way back. There is a harness back there that can get pinched and cause issues.

Re: Brakes engage while driving Sign In

Autozone can only scan the engine controller on the global side. You need an enhanced scan tool to be able to scan the other modules in the vehicle.

Re: Brakes engage while driving Sign In

You need to gather as much information as possible, so you can try figure out which direction to go for troubleshooting your issue. If there are codes stored in the other modules that are related to your issue, it might help point you in the right direction. A high end scan tool might also be able to monitor the ABS/TRAC controller data to see what the inputs and outputs are doing during the event. If a stability/abs/or trac event is happening it should show up on one of the data parameter identifiers. The grinding noise should be investigated also. Maybe you can roll into a shop and have them do an inspection and try to isolate the source of the grinding. Maybe the grinding and the event are related somehow.

Re: Brakes engage while driving Sign In

There shouldn't be any play in the hub bearing. If you spin the wheel, can you hear the bearing grinding? You can remove the wheel speed sensor from the bearing hub. Pull it out and see if there is metal chips on the end or the end is chewed off. Either way if there is play, you'll need to replace that one too. Sensors can also get rust jacked. Rust forms underneath where the sensor mounts, raises it up, and cause a wider gap between the end of the sensor and tone ring. That will make the sensor produce a weaker signal which will cause the ABS controller to interpret a slower wheel speed than the other wheels.
