Break Problem

I have a 1983 mazda 626 and I seem to be having an issue with my breaks. The Interior check break light is on (as thought I have my parking break on) and wont seem to turn off even when taking the break on/off. The car also drives as though it is on as well (I'm getting very high RPMs and the car smells like some sort of burning after driving). The car seems to drive fine aside from that but I know this is a definate problem. Any help I can get would be appriciated.

The dash warning light has two jobs; one is to let you know that the parking brake is on; it uses a switch at the base of the parking brake handle for this. The light’s second job is to let you know that there is a potential problem with the hydraulics of the brake system; it uses either a float switch in the master cylinder’s reservoir or a pressure switch in the brake lines. Regardless of why the light is on; it is and you’re feeling something strange with the brakes; get the brakes inspected as soon as possible. If it is a hydraulic issue the car has done its job of warning you. The next thing that could happen is you’ll loose you’re brakes. Brakes are brakes; any issue with them should never be put off until tomorrow. Dan. Canadian "EH"
