I have a 89 corolla. I checked the coolant today for freeze protection and found the color to be brown. The car runs great and it says its good to -45. Any ideas why it would be that color?

Freeze protection is too strong and the color could be from additives or corrosion in engine/cooling system parts. I'd flush it all out for a regular EG (ethylene/glycol) colorless or plain green anti-freeze set to -34F which is the industry standard for most vehicles and is 50/50 anti-freeze concentrate and water or if you start from empty you can buy pre-mixed which is more money but you know the concentration.
Note: If you flush out all of it some water will not come out so you would add known 50% of system capacity of concentrate and top up to full with good water or distilled is a good idea when there's any doubt,
Note: Higher concentrations don't cool as well or transfer heat as well so more is NOT better,
