Year of vehicle -1972 Make of vehicle (Ford/ Chevrolet) -Oldsmobile Model of vehicle ( Taurus/ Cavalier) - Cutlass Engine size (2.0/ 5.7) - 350ci Mileage/Kilometers - ~4000 Hey guys I am about to buy my first car and I just want to know a few things, I tried looking online for info but I can get one straight forward answer anywhere. What do I need to bring to the sale? What must he have for the sale? How can I get the car registered and inspected? Will I need my insurance to cover this car while it sits or can I wait? And anything else you can give me will help a ton! THANKS!

OK, a couple or questions for you first........... Are you buying this from a licensed dealer or private party? Did you have this car checked out by an independent mechanic yet? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Quote" *What do I need to bring to the sale? *What must he have for the sale? *How can I get the car registered and inspected? *Will I need my insurance to cover this car while it sits or can I wait?" -------------------------------------- One bring $$. For the sale ABSOLUTE PROOF SELLER REALLY OWNS IT WITH PROPERS PAPERS FOR YOUR LOCALE! You register it like any other car OR go for "Antique" plates if you wish. Place by place the insurance is tons lower. You do need to get whatever papers put in your name and get title or the papers that YOU own it. Whatever taxes and fees get paid then and usually you only get 30 days. No insurance needed IMO/Experience if you don't drive it on public roads or live in NH and have "X" # of years without any infractions and don't leave that state. Only state that doesn't require auto insurance for use on their public roads but watch out if you get in an accident at fault! Did you really mean 4,000 miles as in just that known from new? Remember odometers start at zero again on those at 100,000K intervals. Check it out either way real well. If a mothballed car make sure it was done properly and if not still check everything especially leaks - oil, coolant and so on. Good luck, T

Well, I ask if you're buying it from a dealer or a private party and your response is private dealer. What the hell does that mean? On your insurance question, yes, you have to contact your insurance company before driving it but most can give you a binder over the phone. Make sure he shows you a clear title that is in his name not a third party with no liens.

Screw the computer and call an insurance agent or company for details on what is needed especially for a vehicle this old that might NOT have all the papers of a newer something. That was a straight question by Hammer left open. Some states make you get a "dealer's" license if you do more than so many transactions or collectors who buy and sell constantly but essentially just for themselves. You can't drive it even before you buy it if not clearly legal (dealer plate) or something to even check it out. Make sure - don't guess. One mess up or even a typo in a VIN # and you are screwed! DMVs or RMVs are a pest almost always. Here you can't junk a vehicle without a title or if too old total proof of ownership. Could be more and that all taxes or liens are satisfied or it ain't yours! Awesome thank you for all the info, now for the purchase by paperwork you simply mean the title to the car and then a bill of sale? Then after that as long as I have contacted my insurance and have the car insured its ready to drive? And by 30 day buffer or whatever does that mean I have 30 days to pay the use of tax fees or 30 days to go to the dmv?

This will be specific to exact location you register it. Signed titles sometimes are enough. Look at it for places to fill out by owner or if this is a real dealer may have old owner's signature that it was turned over - who knows exactly for your place or where the car is titles or not right now? Some places give you a paper temporary tag or you physically go get one showing all is paid and it's insured - All papers in order. This is MA and screwed up enough. I see temp plates from other places with expiration date on those for a real one. You can't drive a car on the road owned or not unless you have a legal tag of some sort or NO it's not ready to drive. Here again. You can't get a "tag" without insurance so the first thing is you contact them. If you were transferring or trading in that's all different - forget that as this is all new. If you've contacted your insurance why aren't you asking them instead of here? Whether agent or a company representative you need to know exactly. Could have changed last week for all I could know. Date of transaction you then have to (almost everywhere) get a state inspection sticker no matter how old it is. Would be just safety inspection for one this old not emissions and a grace period to get that done unique to your location/state you register it in. If you want to fuss more on the web to DMV for the state you are registering it and dig like I just did. It's all different by locations, usually a whole state except for taxes and fees. Hey - said back several talk to your agent. Select coverage suited to you. FYI if you insure this vehicle for damage you'll certainly need an appraisal for a 1972 car that might be nothing like what you paid for it or intend to. You asked about "a buffer" for taxes and fees. I seriously doubt you can legally drive any car without those all paid in full first - no grace period on that. I know it's your first time dealing with this and will stink almost every time. Dealers here do the leg work for a fee for this crap. It's so bad in Massachusetts and other places you can't even park a car without a fee and sticker on a public road even if not a resident in some places! In short it will boil down to exactly where you plan to leave the car once yours, T
