Can I safely remove exhaust heat shield?

Can I safely remove exhaust heat shield?

I have a 2001 Toyota RAV4 and the exhaust heat shield has rusted to the point that the front is no longer attached. There isn't enough metal left to re-attach it.
Is it safe (i.e., will the gas tank overheat) to simply remove the heat shield.

heatshields are often debated, but in my opinion the auto manufacture wouldnt spend the money to put them there if they arent needed.
now on the more practical side of things. once they start to rust and rattle they can be very annoying and i often rip them off completely.
since heat shields are widely used throught the exhaust system. i usually replace when needed the heat shields adjacent to heat sensitive items under the car.
like:
starter motors,
oil/pwr steering components
transmissions
fuel/brake lines.
there are some heatshields that are in place in order to reduce interior heat transfer to the pass compartment

My Opinion...NO..
The vehicle was engineered/designed in a cetain way..
Those heat shields are placed in such a way as to protect components...etc from the heat of the exhaust..as you probably already know...
NOt sure exactly where this shield is ,but I would have it replaced or if possible secured back in place..Even if temporarily secured in place with mechanics wire... <<< not the correct fix >>>>.....
Especially if it is even remotely close to the fuel tank......nothing to take a chance with...REMEMBER...if it was not needed,the engineers would not have placed it there...
Years back,GM had these big flat monster catalytic converters ,most were installed directly under the passenger front floor..
Well... the shields rusted away/came off/taken off.....the floor above the cat/con would rust away and eventually the carpeting showed thru and some caught fire...
Also had a lot of complaints from people saying their feet would get hot...
So ,IMO,play safe...REPLACE IT....
