Caprice Oil Pressure

1996 Chevy Caprice 350ci 98,000 miles. The oil pressure goes to zero under moderate or greater braking only. All other times it is fine, even on hard turns and rough dirt roads. Could it be the pick-up in the pan? or the oil pressure gauge? Thank you.

caddyman; I'm assuming that you've checked the oil level and that it's full? I'd recommend that you have the oil pressure tested with a mechanical guage. Could be just a faulty sending unit or the wire going to it. Although rare, the pickup tube that is connected to the oil pump can come off. This is not something to put off as I'm sure that you are aware. Could be that the pickup tube has come off and you are losing oil pressure when the oil sloshes forward during braking. Again, rare, but possible. The oil pressure sending unit wire can be grounded and the guage should 'peg' high, but this is not an accurate test. That will only tell you if the guage is working.
