Car "chokes" while idling

I have a 2002 Mazda Protege LX 2.0 with a manual transmission and about 106,000 miles...

Recently, the car has begun to "choke" while at an idle; at times it feels as though it is going to stall. If I press on the accelerator a little bit, it seems to help somewhat. The car also seems to have a difficult time starting up again after turning it off for a brief amount of time. The check engine light is also on. What could be causing this problem?
