Car horn stops working intermittently Sign In

Hello,

The horn in my VW Jetta 2011 stops working intermittently. It only stops working when the beep sound that you get when locking the car from key fob stops working. As soon as that beep lock sound is back on, the horn also works.

One mechanic told me that it is a programming issue. And the other mechanic is telling me that the horn is going bad and needs to be replaced.

I am uncertain on which path should I take to get it resolved. Please advise.

Thanks!

I've got doubts either one of them is right.

? Do you have another key/fob for this car? Try the other one. Why are you using the fob to lock this anyway instead of the lock button that shouldn't lock it with keys in the ignition?

Thank you!

I have tried the other key and its the same issue (no beep sound when locking the door). However, it starts working sporadicly sometimes.

It is interesting that the horn also stops working when that beep sound goes away for a while. Then, I can only hear the click sound of horn.

When I am out of the car, I use the key fob to lock the car but when I am driving I would obviously lock it from the inside. But I know the horn wouldn't work if am not getting beep lock sound from the key fob.

Thanks!

I'm chiefly lost not knowing what some zillion different cars are supposed to do with fobs, thought there was some uniformity? I don't drive everyone else's cars just test a repair enough to know.
If this is new to you and both keys do it on a 10 year old car +/- and it's not just the horn itself* I'd be consulting a VW dealer for suggestions.

It's been decades since I had to replace a horn - just chance maybe plus I don't use one EVER for some reason I don't think folks do where I am. It's obnoxious as if angry at some other vehicle.
*Try some things like find THE horn when it works will need a helper. Guessing big time there's just one wire to it so try unplugging it and if anything looks wrong with the connection. A drop of oil or smear of grease on it just because you were there and can.
VW probably doesn't make horns IDK who makes most actually anymore for lots of assorted vehicles. For that matter I usually have no need to lock a vehicle for just myself and places I go hate coming back to a locked vehicle carrying a load of something go dig for keys fob or not.
Best I can do as there may be something in owner/operator manual to change so it works or found it was some issue at the horn?
Once or still IDK but NYC if your residence your car had to have a setting for "City Horn!!" > Man to I feel old! Too dang noisy for others.
Good luck. Let the site know what was found this is just chat for now over something unused by about anyone I know,

The beep IS chirp of the horn

It should be HT and OP. Why use 2, one could do both,

Thank you! This makes sense. Basically, the horn stops working intermittently.

Thank you for your reply! Yes, it is a NYC car. But the horn does work sometimes. I will try to troubleshoot it a bit further. Does it seem that the horn is going bad it maybe some connections are rusted?

Oh my! It is an NYC car! IDK but check if that BS about quiet horns still exists? 180 miles N. of that but knew of it.

Why would be how obnoxious it all was. No noise in someone's face turning on or off cars - vehicles.

Early alarms honked, flashed lights if it was too windy cars moves. Find it destroyed by annoyed people.

Now it might have a second horn or screwed up wiring to accommodate some very local thing unheard of.

RUST or corrosion always a maybe the actual noise horn would be up front takes a hit just driving in wet, dirty and or salted roads or be bumped if placed too low. Find where it or they are?
IDK, look for hacked wiring a VW would use junk stuff sold here if VW made something to this.

Still a guess but would rule a problem out with any of that,

Those things need to be tested. You don't just guess at this stuff. It could be horn itself, horn relay, fuse corrosion, Body control Module, Horn switch, Clockspring or any related wiring. The switch and clockspring are unlikely due to the way it is acting.
