Car needs gas pedal pressed in order to start Sign In

My car sometimes needs the gas pedal pushed to start. This occurs at random times when the car hasn’t been driven for a couple of hours. If the key is put into the ignition and left for 20 seconds before starting it starts better but sometimes still needs gas. If I don’t push the gas pedal it sounds like it is trying to start but can’t. I have taken it to a mechanic but they couldn’t work out the problem and said to wait until it stops working all together, otherwise the risk is replacing multiple things and non could be the issue! Spark plugs and air filter have just been replaced and the throttle body has been cleaned. The car is a 2009 Mitsubishi Colt. Just seeing if anyone else has any ideas as to what it could be!

What codes is it throwing? Apparently these mechanics didn't just stumble on it so asked you do wait till it dies out totally! Not such a great suggestion IMO.

Seems like it's flooding you didn't say if you pressed gas pedal to floor or what it really shouldn't matter or help at all except to clear a flooded engine then find out why it floods.

IDK but sound like the couple hours time frame it's leaking down as the guess but shouldn't be needed rather be tested for these things, proven and fixed if need be find a different shop as you are causing harm delaying the fix as does anything that makes an engine run poorly or this behavior,

When you step on the throttle, what you are doing is letting air into the system and changing the TPS position.

As a rule when this happens it's usually a bad IAC but that car isn't sold here in the US so I can't tell you if the car even has one.

I don't think it is fuel pump related as that would just cause a long crank, regardless of the throttle position.
