Re: Cold start issue Sign In

If it cranks but doesn't fire up, follow these tests.

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.

Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

Re: Cold start issue Sign In

I scheduled a appointment with a Auto mechanic near by. He want to duplicate the issue. I thank both of you for answering this. Especially the second answer is something i ll talk to the dealer.

We may close this thread.

Re: Cold start issue Sign In

The left the car at 3 pm and they tested it next morning around 12 noon. They said it need a Fuel Pump replace. The seller of this car gave me a set of invoices that part he changed with Nissan Dealer. The same fuel pump was changed exactly on 79088 and now i have 105000 on it. It costed him $800 for him to change that with the dealer.
What is the life of fuel pump kit life in terms of miles.
I decided to change on my own if at all i change the part to save money. So let me know if am going in the right way.

IMO unknown but less if you let vehicle's run low on fuel or out of fuel. Costs: Watch out for deals on line purchases and look for OE whole units generally END the problem. Some knock off brands fail quickly. Beware,

Re: Cold start issue Sign In

Hi all the problem is not resolved even I changed a new Fuel pump assembly. The mechanic said that the fuel pressure was dropping so i changed it but thats NOT the problem.

Can anyone guess what would be a problem?

What is the purpose of an alternator ?
Can alternator create such problem in the morning start?

? I take that, that it still starts no matter what just likes being warmer or having been run fewer hours when you try again? Is it cranking at a normal speed and do you recognize a normal crank speed?

I see you said new battery is there and it can run properly if run after it starts with no complaints so take it this problem is always extended time being off/parked - right?

Just that part would make me look into a weak charging system or battery AND a parasitic drain possible taking power out of the battery just a bit too much new or not it must be known all this is working properly. If slow cranking then I'd be watching for a low charge on the battery and the drain on the battery while off when it shouldn't.

******************
You took it in and had a new fuel pump but it leaks down by THEIR observation but left you no explanation? You also said they couldn't duplicate the problem so that is confusing.

I just don't know how to suggest too much since hopefully a pro has worked on this in person which suggests the tech wasn't complete in checking or duplicating exactly when YOU have the problem?

For now if this is just being elusive to find exact reasons I just ask if the car is parked for you in some unusual conditions? Not so common but if you park this at a wild (whatever that means) angle vs level parking AND battery's state of charge is low it might have a sensitive light switch for trunks, hood, glove box like things that are on in only that extreme so do not duplicate for another. If so try a different way to park or find out on that. I would purposely take out such light bulbs or disconnect them or if found and adjustable fix that. That's pretty rare and only applies if that is part of the situation at all.

Arggh. Do you want to take it back to the shop or have you mentioned it's not fixed? Sorry - this is about all questions for you not answers,

Re: Cold start issue Sign In

Not sure what am supposed to do. The mechanic shop is close today and tomorrow. So now am trying to start my car and go to advance auto parts to test my alternator.

I never had any flickering lights or bulbs. The battery has 650 CCA on it and Interstate battery. In fact I dont use my security system on. Once the car starts it run like a wonderful vehicle.

Re: Cold start issue Sign In

Ok I just tested my Alternator and Battery. They tested it with load condition - AC on and high beam on.

They said both are perfect.

I got my Coolant spilled over the engine 1 month ago and I replaced the radiator. Could that be an issue?

Re: Cold start issue Sign In

Oh boy. I really wanted to know if WHEN this gives you trouble the engine cranks at a normal speed. Seems you got it running and by the time anything tested all was fine so no answer for the testing.

If you had a voltmeter you could see how much of those CCA (an idea) was being used to crank engine to start by watching voltage drop or too far such that engine cranked slowly and volts under spec such that fuel delivery could be under spec as well.

OK - no real shop seems available and if this is behaving after you drive it there testing right away isn't going to prove too much.

Now you've said coolant "spilled" over engine and radiator was replaced. What happened? Did it overheat from low coolant or just a leak in the radiator spraying at engine? Do you end up needing to add coolant before that or constantly if even small amounts? Have you kept it from freezing coolant in system? If not it would freeze at radiator first, not flow, overheat even if frigging cold out and might have a crack in radiator up to any kind of problems in engine with coolant and head gasket if overheated and all this could be that you are getting coolant into a cylinder and part hydro-locking and it wont start well then vapor when running could go backwards into cooling system.

That's now all wild guessing with missing information along the way. If you take a vehicle in to a shop and don't tell of something like the coolant issue by now how would they know to add that into the equation?

Re: Cold start issue Sign In

Suddenly i day the plastic near to Radiator lid cracked and spilled over the car. then I changed the radiator on my own and didn't changed the Radiator Lid. On a highway the radiator hose which goes to engine came out with engine temperature high. Then i stopped the car immediately. Called the dealer and towed the car. That nissan dealer changed the hose real tight. Now i took my car and drover for 10 miles and my whole radiator burst and replaced the whole radiator including the cap. The dealer or any one didn't say what is the cause of the radiator burst 2 times. The whole thing cost me 1k. My guess was bad radiator lid.
I drove my car from VA to NC 1 month before. The car started giving start in the morning. I need to start the car at 10 pm and go for a ride and then immediately i need try start the car at 6 am in the morning.
I went mechanic and he wants me to change fuel pump i changed and u all know the story now.
Now there is no problem with fuel pump, alternator and battery.
"As a side node we notice pressure builds up in the cooling system when running the engine a few seconds. possible internal head and / or heaad gasket leak." this is the extra comment given by mechanic other than that fuel pump issue.
Also can u guess if timing can create a problem after long stand. To be more clear. I park my car at 9:15 am and start it back at 12:15 noon just 3 hours. I still see there is a jerk while starting. I don't feel comfortable. It starts like a tractor I mean like a diesel vehicle.

Re: Cold start issue Sign In

I guess we progress one catastrophe at a time. If you check cylinder #3 bet it's soaked with coolant and when you manage to get it to run the compression gasses are blowing into cooling system if it pressures up that fast.

Overheat = troubles with head gasket up to cracks in head or who knows about now?

This thread is all over the place and car needs a good qualified check out and estimate on what it will take to put this back in order. So far I'm shocked a real shop hands you back a car with problems they should know can be a disaster without making it clear to you that driving it at all anymore can cause or make tons worse.

Suggestion for now is to find out if this car is worth doing anything more to or look for another IMO. So much is screwed up it doesn't seem to end and getting worse now,

Re: Cold start issue Sign In

Sounds like you may have done some serious internal damage when you overheated it the first time. The fact that it blew out the new radiator is a strong indicator that there are combustion gases in the cooling system. You need to have it tested by a competent repair shop.
