Coolant hose leak
|
|
|
Hello I just joined the forum to get advice on what to expect as far as repairs, costs, maintenance. I was trying to get out of my driveway which was deep with snow and like an idiot pushed my 2008 Chrysler Town and Country Touring too far. I noticed steam and the smell of coolant coming from the hood. I opened it up and it was a hard plastic hose with a hairline crack about an inch long squirting fluid. Its definitely some kind of coolant hose leading into a space right beneath where the spark plugs are. It appears to be a Y shaped fitting that leads into a part of the engine. The crack is just along the natural seam where the plastic was molded. I really would like to know how much this is going to cost me? I don't have a lot of money and we have everything hinging on our ability to travel. Thanks in advance for any help or advice you guys can give me. http://imgur.com/M91RMRQ

Can you take a picture of it and upload it to a picture hosting site like Photobucket. They will give you a link to make it appear here. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Hard to tell exactly from that pic, but I think you are looking at the y pipe that runs to one of the heater cores. Hard to give an idea of price without making a bunch of assumptions at this point. ____________________________________________________ Willing to help, willing to learn... Rob

Hope that pic shows - a bit wide in my view. Following your red line do you mean a molded hose with clamps at each end in that pic? If so you should be able to get that hose aftermarket and would need to be a pre molded hose exactly for this vehicle. I don't see a plastic part or "Y" in that pic but either way you are there looking at it and know. Without giving it an exacting name you may need to point at it on a diagram at dealer or parts outlet that can show you the parts in a diagram. As silly as a hose may seem some can still be a real PITA to properly replace. That type clamp can be very strong and hard to do with good pliers and they do make a tool just for those, good ones quite expensive and some about impossible to release and install just the hose without one depending on access. If hose is to be replaced carefully slice it with clamp off and out of the way with a razor and peel and twist it off not just pull hard as I can't see just what in the pic but some items not broken now could be broken by replacing the leaking item. Point is you can get in trouble with what may appear to be so simple. Filling system alone you need to know it's truly filled a discussion on it's own. For now I suspect you'll save by sending this out for the fix unless you are well equipped for even this. Leaking I can't suggest driving it either except just to move it at location to do it. Tow may be required. Other: You said you pushed it too hard? What do you mean by that? Did you slam this into gear at high RPM to get unstuck? You may have broken a motor mount that allowed too much engine motion and yanked on hose or item that's leaking so check for that too or you aren't good to go if so. Understood you want to save bucks but there's high risk if this small repair goes wrong. Guess is this should be a "while you wait" repair at a good shop, T

I doubt that hose is sold in the parts stores. You'll need to get it from the dealership. Go there with the last 8 digits of your VIN and that picture so they can look it up. Should be a pretty simply DIY fix to install it. I like how clean your engine compartment is. Looks nice.

I don't think DIY was his intention here. He was looking for a price estimate. He would probably have trouble getting past the clamps. I would think about $150-$200 with coolant and labor.

I would like to thank all of you who took the time out of your day to respond to my thread. All of you really helped a lot. I ended finding out that the part that was leaking was called a y fitting/heater hose. I called the Chrysler dealership and they were happy to hook me up with one.....for $177.00. I told him to go F**k himself. I went over to NAPA and got it for $70.00 instead. My neighbor offered his services as he is fairly well equipped with tools and a garage. It took about 20 minutes to get each clamp off. Whoever said that the clamps would give trouble was damn right. Iv never seen a clamp that looked so simple, yet was so hard to remove. Eventually we got the new one on and had the van running in short order. I just thank God that it was just that and no leaks in the radiator. I learned my lesson though. Don't try to drive out of a snow drift...dig yourself out. Again much thanks!
