I have a 97 Chevy cavalier with a cooling system that recently gave up on me. I have had this car for two years and every now and then it will get a little too hot when idling but never such a serious problem. I had a full tank of coolant a month ago, and the other day it started overheating and it was almost in the redby the time I got home. Foolishly I poured 20 dollars of coolant into it, without realizing there must be a leak. And to the best of my knowledge it is all gone now. I almost reached red temps again this morning so I know this problem is not going away. I popped the hood when I got home and the resorvoir tank had steam coming out of it and was quietly hissing, it seemed to be under a lot of pressure. I felt the tubes running from the reservoir when it was hot this morning, one was very hot and the other was totally cold. I noticed coolant leaking the right underside of the car, behind the reservoir, but only when it was running. The air conditioner blows freezing cold even when the engine is hot. I'm trying to figure out if this is a thermostat problem or a busted water pump or a combination of problems., I don't know a whole lot about cars but I was able to deduce this from all the nonspecific information online. If you could try and diagnose my problem I would greatly appreciate it. Feel free to request any information, or provide tests to isolate the issue. I appreciate your time. -Jack

The running hotter at idle was normal. It is designed to do that. At this time it seems that you have a leak. You need to pressure test the system and determine where the leak is so you can repair it. Do not drive4 it in the meantime. It only takes a split second to do serious internal damage from heat. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
