Cooling system problem...scared im being taken advantage of... Sign In

2001 buick century 3.1 L, 6 cyl. Ok my car was overheating quickly and had a horrible leak. While driving the temp gauge would start to go down but when came to a stop would shoot up fast then go down fast when actually driving. The temp gauge fluctuation would go up and down quickly..a back yard mechanic i know looked at it and said coolant was just pouring out of my waterpump and that was my problem so i replaced the waterpump..the car kept doing the same thing so had someone else look at it and told them what was going on and they said it was the thermostat so i had that replaced...car kept doing the same thing..i then flushed the system and used radiator flush cleaner then added stop leak hoping to fix the leak but car still was doing the same thing..i finally gave in and took it to a real garage. The guy told me it was my intake gasket and there was "a chunk missing" from it. He said he couldnt even perform a pressure test bc wouldnt hold any pressure...he fixed that and then told me i also had a bad leak from my radiator so had him replace that as well...so at this point my waterpump, thermostat, intake gasket and radiator has all been replaced...i paid the guy for doing the in take gasket and radiator and while paying he told me i had a developing head gasket problem..i left the garage. Didnt even get 3 miles down the road and the damn car was still doing the SAME THING!!! Temp gage shot up to 3 quarters hott then would go down to about half when driving and go up n down...turned around and went back to the garage and i was pissed. I get there and im like my cars doing the same thing!! He said he test drove it after fixing it and didnt have a problem but i dont believe that because like i said i didnt even get 5 min away and my car was doing the same damn thing.. The guy says well its your head gasket. So i left my car there to have my head gasket fixed...i know nothing about cars but what i dont understand is how he didnt know i had a bad head gasket...also how in the world did my car have a bad waterpump, thermostat, radiator, intake gasket and head gasket all at the same time??? Im so scared im going to pay this guy again after he fixes my head gasket and it wont be fixed :(. Please give me some input!!!!!

It sounds like most of these issues come right back to you. Your system had multiple leaks which didn't happen all at once. That means you have been oblivious to all these issues until they accumulated into this mess. Yes, you probably do have a blown head gasket at this point. That was caused by blatantly ignoring all the cooling system problems and allowing the car to overheat.

The reason the temp gauge was jumping all over the place was because the system was so low on coolant that it was full of air instead of coolant. The temp sensor can only read coolant temp, not air so it reads cool when it is in contact with air, when it reality the engine is extremely hot and the gauge can't tell.

No, he couldn't tell if the car had a blown head gasket until all the other problems were resolved first, although judging by the history, it would have come as no surprise.

I never ignored a problem though. As soon as there was an issue i had it looked at and taken care of.

You had a radiator, a water pump and an intake all with leaks. That didn't all happen at the same time. You may not have realized these things were happening, but you should have.

You shouldn't be waiting for the car to overheat before you check the coolant level.

You just learned a very expensive lesson on maintaining your car.
