Dodge Durango power steering whines Sign In

The power steering pump on my 2001 Dodge Durango continues to whine even after I had it replaced. The garage put 2 different pumps on and it still has the same problem. Any ideas?

The first thing I would do, is to check that the steering linkage & suspension (ie: ball joints & tie rods) are not seized or binding. With both front wheels off the ground, you should be able to turn the wheels (left & right) at the wheels; full travel from lock to lock with a small amount of effort.
If there were a seized ball joint, the pump would constantly have to produce full pressure to move the steering, causing the pump too fail.
Next thing would be to test pump pressures; idling without touching the steering wheel the pressure should be a minimum of 50 psi but if the pressure is above 125psi; check for a restriction in the lines.
If no restrictions are found; the spool valve in the steering gear maybe defective, that would mean replacing or rebuilding the gear.
Last thing I can think of is to make sure that the replacement pump(s) are the proper one. Looking at the specs and part numbers, there are at least three different pumps. Depending on engine size, 2 or 4 wheel drive and pump shaft diameter 17 or 18mm. If by chance the replacement pump was meant for the smaller engine, 2 wheel drive and the truck has the larger V8 and 4X4 that pump is working at its max all the time. I believe the different pumps are all close enough that they would inter change. Some after market rebuilders lump all the pumps into one basket and at times their quality control may leave a bit to be desired. Get a dealer reman and have them order it using the serial number of the truck.
