Hello,

I know very little about automotive repairs but my girlfriend has encountered a situation that doesn't sound right to me and i hoped I could get some feed back.

In September she had her front brake pads and rotars replaced because her brakes felt a bit off and they were squealing, the auto repair shop charged her $230.00.
From the time she left the shop and for the next few days the brakes squealed and smelt like metal being melted. they replaced the rotars and pads, and charged her $139.09. They said the rotars were under warranty so there was no charge for them but the pads plus labor came to $139.09.

The smell and squealing remained and 4 days later they said it must be the calipers, she was charged $149.74 for them to be replaced.

After a week the brakes still squealed and the smell came back, they said it must be the brake hoses and they were replaced for $150.00.

So far she has spent $668.83 on her front brakes since September. Its been a few days and the smell hasn't come back but they squeal just as bad as they did in September.

Does anyone have any idea whats wrong?
Should it be this hard and expensive for a mechanic to find the problem?

Sounds like you went to the wrong shop. Someone is going to have to determine which wheels are doing this. It could be a bad flex hose or master cylinder but it sounds like it was misdiagnosed a number of times. I would be back there demanding my money back and then bring it to a more competent shop.
