Drive shaft stuck on 98 Protege
Hi, I've managed to remove 95% of my driver's side drive shaft but can't for the life of me remove the spline from the transmission. I cut the boot so all there is is the cup with the spline plugged into the gear box. I've pried and pried with a screwdriver and drove a chisel with a hammer in between the cup (not sure the proper term for it) and transaxle but it wouldn't budge. I'm going to try and track down a puller that will work on this car but that might take days or weeks. I have to work tomorrow night so my question: Will it do any harm to the transmission or be unsafe to drive with only one drive shaft?

You won't be able to drive the vehicle. Due to the design of the differential inside the transmission power doesn't get transmitted to the other wheel if you have a CV axle missing or unplugged. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Most of the time you can get them out with a huge pry bar, but you have to have enough room to swing it and you sure don't want to crack the case. Sometimes the right angle makes a difference. The tool with the slide hammer makes it easier as long as it is designed to fit on that set up. Eric has some good stuff: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jydxpsh13WQ I saw this video and thought it was pretty ingenious. A lot of work though, but if it is really stuck, the axle is garbage, and you don't have a lot of space to play in, seems like good idea. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0lFkaXjnFg Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Thanks for the links. I found this along the way. I thinks it's the tool you're talking about. Looks like it should work. http://www.otctools.com/products/inner-cv-joint-puller

I did what the guy in the video above did (drilled holes in the bearing housing and connected a slide hammer) and it worked like a charm. The only thing is is I can't get my deposit back for the core charge but I don't care. The satisfaction of watching that part come flying out with such little effort after struggling for hours trying to pry it out was worth every penny of the core - and then some.
