ERG valve on Mazda Protege Sign In

The check engine light on my 2002 Mazda Protege came on. I took it to the dealer, they cleaned the EGR valve but said it needed to be replaced. I am not having any problems with the car yet - but how long do I have before I do if I don't take immediate action? I do not want to fork over $350 right now. Can I wait until after the holidays?

Don't wait forever but you should have some time if the car is running well. Are you interested in doing this yourself? Shouldn't be a tough job, and you can buy the part new for less than mentioned I'm sure, T

Thanks Tom,
Yes, there is the possibility of doing it myself (well, my husband actually) Smile if it is simple enough. He is knowledgable with cars. How do I go about getting instructions on how to do it?

Look at the part. Most have a vacuum hose and a wiring plug and just two nuts or bolts to attach it. A new gasket would be in order too. I'd bet it's less than $100 bucks and a ten minute job. It may require some tools that get into tough places but if you are sure this is the problem you will be able to do this even if you have to buy some obstruction tools, T
