Hello,

I have a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse that has 100600 miles and is giving me a big headache since hitting the 100k mark.

A month ago I went in for a tuneup because I had been long over due and my car sounded terrible. A day after my tuneup the check engine light came on and a few days later my car started jerking. The code read that there was a misfire in cylinder 5. I informed the mechanic and he said he would have to take my engine back apart but he believed it was the EGR valve. After taking it apart he noticed that the EGR valve was clean but said we should change it just in case and that one of the hoses were bad and need to be replaced. He also changed my transmission oil, filters, brakes and rotors.

The day after I received my car the check engine light came on again and read p0171 and P0174 SYSTEM TO LEAN bank 1 and bank 2. The car also slowly began to start rattling really bad at idle. You can hear the rattle to the left of the steering wheel from the dashboard.

When he came to check why it was reading like this he said he could here the air coming out of the tube and when he pulled the black tube up you could no longer hear the air and the sliver latch would click back on. This was located on the left side of the engine. He said it could be a vacuum leak but he would have to pull the engine back apart.

Not to mention when it is hot outside my temperature gauge now raises to the H like my car is about to explode and sounds really weird but this only happens at idle as well. Before I have this mechanic work on my car I would like some professional advice on what should be my next move because it seems to just get worse.

Is this mechanic licensed and insured? Is he/she moonlighting? Or is this someone that did a tune up on a lawn mower and is now claiming to be a mechanic?

You need to take it to another repair shop. EGR valve won't cause a single cylinder misfire. You don't have to take an engine apart to find out the cause of a problem unless you determined the problem is a mechanical problem inside the engine. There is non
intrusive testing that you can do on various problems that don't require dismantling the engine.

You shouldn't drive or run the engine anymore until the cause of the overheating is determined. If you keep driving it with the temp gauge pegged, you'll just destroy the engine.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Sounds like you took your car to another Craigslist "expert." There is a reason shops charge what they do.

I am with DS, this needs the proper attention from a real pro before you turn this into scrap metal.
