Engine Overheating

I'm kind of an amateur and in the learning process of working on cars. I own a 2005 Buick Lacrosse CXL with the 3.8. I had recently had an issue with the vehicle over heating when idling for a few minutes and after it's been running for a while. It does run at normal operating temperature. I replaced the elbow tubes (which were worn and did have a crack) and it did help but not correct the problem. I checked the thermostat and the hose leading to it felt a little dry and did not have any coolant spill out. This was after the car sat for a couple of hours. Could there be an issue with the radiator or water pump?

You may have no problem at all. depending just how hot it is getting. This car was engineered to run hotter at idle and low speeds. The cooling fans don't come on until about 226 degrees so unless it is going all the way into the red zone on the gauge, it's probably fine. Let it idle and make sure the fan does eventually come on. You could also just flip the AC on to see if the fan comes on then. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
