Engine overheats when at idle

I have a 2005 Ram 1500 with the 4.7L V8 and only 67,000 miles on it. Engine temp is right where it needs to be until I am stopped in traffic or at a light at which point the temperature starts creeping up. If I put the truck in nuetral and rev the engine a bit, the temperature starts coming back down. I have replaced the fan clutch and the thermostat as well as flushed the radiator and the problem still persists. The water pump is less than a year old so I don't think that is the issue. I am fairly certain it is not a head gasket issue since I changed my oil and found no trace of coolant in the oil. Also, my heater works fine. What could be going on with my truck?

jholmberg; My first instinct would be the fan clutch. Even though you replaced it, make sure that it is 'locking up' when the engine temp is at normal operating temp. This can be dangerous, for obvious reasons, but you can take a piece of cardboard and see if you can stop the fan from spinning at this time. You shouldn't be able to. It is very rare, but the impeller on a water pump can become loose from the hub and not spin quick enough at idle. You'd almost need to remove the thermostat and watch flow rate, and even then, it's a tough call. Doesn't sound like a thermostat or radiator issue, to me. Good luck. Loren SW Washington
