Engine starts to rattle when I stop.

If I am driving then come to a stop and stay in drive, my engine will begin to rattle. In reverse I still hear the noise. If I switch to neutral the noise is reduced dramatically. If I put it in park the noise goes away completely. I would appreciate any help. Thank you.
I have a 07 Yaris.

Engine off, tap the exhaust pipe with a rubber mallet. If you hear a rattle, put the car on a hoist and investigate.
