Exhaust and "Check Engine" light

Just yesterday, my 2002 Hyundai Accent started to sound like a weed wacker. With previous cars that I owned, there would usually be some indication that the exhaust was going bad before it really started to sound this bad. However, my exhaust sounded perfectly fine until yesterday and now it sounds like the muffler fell off (which it did not). This happened while I was about a 150 miles from home, so I curtailed the rest of my trip and started heading home. About 55 miles from home, the "check engine" light came on. I watched all my gauges closely and listened carefully to the engine, but everything seemed to be okay. Fluid leveIs were okay, temperature was right where it should be and sound was normal. I continued on, monitoring the performance very carefully, and the engine seemed fine. A few questions that I have are: 1) Can a problem with the exhaust cause the "Check Engine" light to come on? 2) I will be addressing the exhaust issue very soon, but will I be doing more damage to the car or engine by driving it for day or two until this can be repaired? 3) Considering that I do a lot of stop-and-go urban driving, how long should an exhaust system last? I had the entire system replaced 22 months ago by a Hyundai dealership. Since that time I've put 23,500 miles on the car. Shouldn't the exhaust last longer than this? Any other hints, suggestions or potential problems you can think of would be much appreciated. Thanks, Chuck Lancaster, PA

The exhaust simply has to be checked out. You may not have replaced the whole system 22 months ago but the more likely rear parts after the converter(s) An O2 sensor could have blown out or who knows. You shouldn't drive it but probably too late now as hot exhaust gasses may have damaged something not related to the exhaust at all. If you can hear it you can find it, T
