I have a 1998 4WD Eddie Bauer Ford Explorer. For a while now, it's been shutting off when I stop the car. I can tell it's going to do it from the noises it makes and the way it feels when I start to stop. If I don't ever come down to a complete stop, I can keep it from doing it.

I've had a lot of work done on it and nothing seems to have fixed it. But of course, when I take it in to the shop and they drive it, it works fine. I've had it hooked up to the diagnostic computer at Auto Zone on more than one occasion and it says nothing's wrong.

I've had the idle air intake valve replaced b/c that's what the Ford place said the problem might be. That didn't work either.

It's really more of a huge inconvenience than anything right now, but I know that it's very dangerous to have this happen randomly when I'm driving.

Any suggestions?

With no codes right now (you will have one soon though) this could be a vacuum leak - just a split in a vacuum hose or item/gasket that tells computer info to make adjustments but the info is wrong and it acts on bad info. It could be a lot of other things too. Shops in biz should not be guessing at your expense. In that it behaves when you go to a shop you may need to leave it there for it to misbehave on them. Same thing has happened to me over a career at this, that a car would run perfectly when I checked it and it does make it hard to fix what isn't broken in front of you,

Does it idle OK in park? If you release the brake pedal, does the idle seem to come back?? If so, look at the check valve in the vacuum line to the brake power booster. If it is bad, it can cause a loss of vacuum and cause the engine to stall. Just an option. Might not be it, but my way out in left field brain needs to know that is not it.

No, the only way to make it not stop is to push back on the gas pedal. I used to be able to throw it in neutral before I would stop and then put it back in gear when the light turned green (or whatever the situation was) and it would go fine. Now that won't even work. As soon as I put it back in gear, it dies.

The small service station that changes my oil said that it was probably a vacuum hose a long time ago, but everyone else has said that's not what's wrong.

I'm just tired of dealing with it, but can't afford anything new. Everything else on the car is fine, especially cosmetically. It still looks brand new.

I hate to say it, but it almost sounds like a torque converter problem. Does the engine sorta lug down like using a standard shift without pushing the clutch in? If it does, it is either the torqye converter clutch solenoid or the torque converter itself.

I don't really have enough experience with standard shifts to know if it is or not, but sometimes it definitely jerks. I really don't know a whole lot about cars, if you couldn't tell from these posts. I really do appreciate your help. It's been doing it since around Christmas and no one can seem to figure out what's going on.

When you are stopping, does the vehicle seem to want to keep going? Sort of like it wants to keep running and try to die at the same time? If so, then I would look at the TCC.(torque converter clutch) solenoid. A good trans shop should be able to diagnose it rather cheaply. Might even diagnose for free if you have repairs done there. But if it is just the TCC, it can be replaced by anyone that has some mechanical ability. If it is the torque convertewr, the entire transmission has to be removed. Click here and read some information on your transmission and you will not go in blind. The other links on the page tell you about more of the things that make it work. Good luck and let us know if there is anything else.

Re: Exlporer Shuts off when I stop Sign In

I JUST WENT THROUGH THIS SAME PROBLEM WITH MY 1997 BLAZER.AT FIRST I THOUGHT IT WAS THE TORQUE CONVERTOR CLUCTH SOL.(TCC) BUT IN NEUTRAL IT WOULD STILL STALL WHEN I GO TO STOP.I DISSCONNECTED MY VACUM HOSE TO MY BRAKE BOOSTER TO SEE WHAT WOULD HAPPEN AND STILL STALLED.I REPLACED THE IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE(IAC) AND IT STILL DID THE STALLING WHEN I GO TO STOP.WHAT I THEN NOTICED WAS ALL THE CARBON BUILT UP ON MY THROTTLE BODY ASSY. AND IN MY INTAKE MANIFOLD.I CLEANED THESE OUT WITH THE PROPER SOLVENTS FOR A THROTLE BODY ENGINE AND MADE SURE ALL THE PORTS IN THE MANIFOLD WRE CLEAN AND CLEAR SO I WOULD GET THE PROPER VACUM TO EVERYTHING.THIS MIGHT BE A POSSABILITY FOR YOUR PROBLEM.I TO DID NOT HAVE ANY FAULT CODES COMING ON. HOPE THIS MAY BE OF SOME HELP TO YOU.
