My car was diagnosed with bad front wheel bearings as well as clutch on the virge of going out. Pep boys wants $70.00 for each wheel bearing /hub assembly with$150.00 each side to install Total $440.00 plus tax, shop cost etc. I am reasonably mechanically inclined. My question? How hard is it to remove Wheel bearing hub, and reinstall, any special tools required? Clutch cost at Pep Boys $550.00 this seams resonable? Any suggestions appreciated!Old Man needing help.

?? How does $140 in parts get to $440?? for wheel bearing on a Cavalier?? Heck - if your near me I'll have that done in about the time you can check your tire pressure! It probably doesn't need both either! Ok: This could be different than ones from GM I've done in various models but you just remove the caliper, take out cotter pin on I think a 30mm nut, some bolts from outside or inside (forgot but think outside) and use air wrench to remove and install the whole hub and bearing. Flex bar and socket if no air tools might give you a hard time on the large nut on the driveshaft. Cutch for $550 would be a bargain if a complete job was done. Not as DIY friendly as just the bearing(s) T

Tom Greenleaf, Thanks for your quick reply concerning my Hub assembly with Bearings. The cost the mechanic wants to charge is $150.00 labor for each wheel and an additional $70.00 for each hub assembly total $440.00 plus tax's and other incidental charges they always tack on. It sounds as though this job may be relatively easy if you have a breaker bar,and correct socket. Thanks Ron Knight

Hello Ron Knight. Welcome. If you want to do the repair yourself, click here for instructions. It is not that hard of a job to do. Good luck. Some of the special tools may be able to be avoided with a little ingenuity. Being way2old is why I need help from younger minds
