I have a 2014 Ford Escape that is making this clunking/rattling noise when idle:
https://youtube.com/shorts/CZ5XpRixE9k
  • It idles at around 745rpm.
  • At over 1000rpm you never hear the noise.
  • As the rpm makes its way from 1000 down to 745 you start to hear it.
  • Sometimes shifting it into park or neutral makes the noise go away for a couple seconds

  • I've had a couple mechanics look at it and don't see anything obvious.
  • The car's model: 2014 Ford Escape SE 4-door 2WD

  • It had a transmission problem a few years back that the dealer fixed but don't know the details of what they did. The issue back then was that you'd put it into drive and it would just sit there and not move.
  • 2 months ago a mechanic replaced some fuel line valve (I believe). Before that work, once or twice a month you'd hear a loud putting noise coming from the fuel door and if you let the car's RPM's get low it'd stall.
  • Haven't changed the oil since the summer :-/
Any ideas what's going on here would be AMAZING. Thanks for taking the time, I really appreciate it.
-Mike

That sounds a little like the drive belt tensioner bottoming out due to belt stretch. One way to determine this is to temporarily remove the drive belt and run the engine just for a short time to see if the noise is gone.

Thanks so much for the help! When the mechanic got in there he found the nuts on the flywheel studs to be loose. When the dealership fixed the transmission a few years back I'm guessing they pulled a Boeing and didn't properly torque those.

Yep, that makes sense.

Closing this now as solved.
