1999 Minnie Winnie on Ford E-350 chassis, V-10 motor, 35k original miles. Has an intermittent problem starting. Approx. 30% of the time it won't start. Turn ignition key, all lights, radio, gauges etc. come on, just one loud click.(sounds like it may be coming from starter area?) Truck has always eventually started again, usually after sitting for 10-20 minutes. Battery checked out good, 12.7 + amps. While truck is dead, tried jiggling key switch and tried different movements of the gear shift. Doesn't seem to have a positive effect in terms of starting it up. I'm wondering if the problem lies in the ignition switch, steering column, or starter or ?? Any help would be greatly appreciated. The last time this happened was right in the middle of the boat ramp! And nobody wants to be that guy!!

If you are getting a single, loud click, then it sounds like the starter. I don't know if you have easy access to the starter but if you do try tapping on the body of the starter with a hammer while a helper is trying to start it. If that makes it crank, then the starter is likely the problem. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
