I have a 2001 mercury sable LS. Noticed a "clunking sound coming from front end suspension. occurs on both sides, but only when the respective wheels/tires go over abrupt/isolated bumps. It doesn't "clunk" when both sides, together go over a light/gentle dip in the road, however. I don't notice any unusual sounds when turning. No vibrations noted in the steering wheel, or anything like that.

Did you ever figure out what this was? I have the same problem with my 92 accord.

Stabilizer/sway bar supports and items associated with it can do this when unequal bumps are encountered and be silent with the same bump on both sides. Try having a look while someone bounces up and down on just one side and see if the finds the problem,
