Fuel gage/check engine light Sign In

The check engine light comes on only when the fuel gage reaches 1/4 tank of gas. When the gage then starts for drop back and forth from 1/4 to empty. It is now difficult to predict how much gas is in the tank. Is this a fuel pump problem or not. Also, if it is, what is a reasonable cost. Unsure

Re: Fuel gage/check engine light Sign In

Year, make, model & engine would be good things to know?

Have the Computer's code(s) read and let us know the code numbers.

Today’s fuel gauges are used for much more then just telling us it’s time to put more fuel in.
The computer uses the fuel level sensor to know when to perform emission self tests and if by chance this is an E85 vehicle, the computer uses the level sensor (along with other sensors) to determine the amount or percentage of Ethanol that is in the fuel tank.
So what you thought was maybe a simple generic question; could in fact be a very complicated one?

Dan.
