GF's Car overheats at stop light.. help her... Sign In

Hey all... My GF's car overheats while stopped. If the AC is turned on it starts to go back down. The temp. is fine while actually driving...It's only when she's stopped and idling that it overheats. What is most likely the problem, and how easy is it to fix? (she's got a 96 dodge neon). Thanks in advance for the help..

Sounds a LOT like the electric fan for the radiator is NOT coming on. It's forced to come on with the A/C request so you get the cooling. The fix could be a relay/fuse or the temp sensor which I think is right at the thermosat. Good luck,

But the car stays cool fine with the AC off while actually driving... Do you still think it could be the temp sensor or relay/fuse? which is more likely?

The car probably stays cool while driving because of the air flow which stops when the car stops. In other words - when the car is moving there is enoughair flow to cool it, then it needs help - the electric fan.

Asking for A/C will force the fan on is all of that system is ok, and keep doing that as overheating can lead to some very expensive repairs - and I don't think this one is right now, good luck and don't wait too long with this,
