Grand Prix turning over, but not starting

I have a 02 Grand Prix w/ a 3.1 Liter Engine that will start sometimes, but every once in awhile (and more often lately) it will only turn over, but the engine will not fire. We took the car to a place and they GUESSED it was the crank sensor (whatever that is) and replaced it. Of course, when we picked it up, the car started. The next day went to start and the it turned over, but still not firing the engine. We called a friend who knows a little about cars and said he thought it sounded like one of the coil packs are going bad and that is why it will start sometimes, but not all. Just wanted to know if you have any suggestions. Thanks

Find out what is missing - spark or fuel. What did you mean by intermittent turning over? That seems like a different problem, T
