Hello, we have a 2009 Suzuki XL7 2WD with 75k miles. We bought it used and heard a grinding noise and slipping when the brakes would be pressed, so we got new rotors and pads put on. Well, it still does it. It doesnt do it all the time and there doesnt seem to be any ryme or reason to when it will. You will push the brake and it will brake fine, then you hear a grinding and the brakes slip, then they will catch again. Speed doesnt seem to be a factor as it will do it when braking at 50mph to 10mph to complete stop. Could it be the ABS? or the wheel bearings?

Yes, it could be the ABS with a false activation. If one of the wheel speed sensors is not reading accurately, the computer will interpret that as a lockup and engage the ABS. You would need a professional scan tool capable of making a frame by frame movie of the sensor data. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Thanks for the reply. Theres no way I would have access to that tool, so lets say that the this is the problem. Whats the next step in fixing it, is it just a matter of replacing a sensor, cleaning something, or a lot more complicated than that? Ultimately, I think im going to have to take it to the dealer , but would like to have an understanding of what could be wrong so they dont try and bs me Again, thanks. This forum seems very helpful, the Suzuki forum is lousy.

If they are able to confirm a bad speed signal, they they have to determine if it's caused by the sensor itself, the tone ring it reads off or something else like wiring.

So if it was the ABS engaging due to this, would the ABS light blink or show up on the dash? Is there anything in the computer that I can pull that will say the ABS is engaging?

Ok thanks. You've been very helpful. Im going to do a little more research, but it does in fact seem like its the ABS turning on. When we got the brakes done, the guy said the ABS was very dirty and he cleaned it (at the time I wasnt sure what he meant and I am still a little uncertain as to what he did). I saw online for the ABS scanners, do these work the same way that the OBD scanners work? I may be able to get a hold of one of these.

No, those are code readers only. You need better equipment than that to find your problem.

With ABS work you really need a ABS scanner and a lab scope, ABS systems are a bit different then OBD-2. You should have the diagnostics done by someone with the proper equipment. Hope it turns out to be someone cheap, good luck. -------------------------------------------------------- Your only as good as your tools!
