HELP! 2006 Jeep Commander Sign In

hey everyone im new to this page, and im here kinda out of desperation, i just bought an 06 jeep commander limited with the hemi 5.7L, and i have a problem. Im only getting 6.6 mpg or 35 L per 100kms , ive taken it in to the dealership, they ran a scanner and found nothing wrong, but the dealer agrees the fuel consumption is way way too high!, then to get another opinion i took it to another two dealers and ran another two obd2 scanners, again nothing wrong but they both agreed that the fuel consuption is way off, so heres my cry for help, 1. can anyone tell me what their 06 hemi fuel consumption is? 2. can anyone tell me if they have had the same issue with their commander/ hemi engine, 3. the only recommendation i was given from anyone was to get a tune up done, mainly spark plugs changed, but i cant see that affecting the fuel economy that badly, so does anyone have an idea what is going on??? no codes? no engine lights, nothing just really bad fuel economy???? PLEASE HELP

That is a bit low......A quick check shows about 13 city, 14 hwy..

With the new comp systems, if you get something that is cutting your fuel mileage in 1/2,,,,usually it will set a trouble code.....

You can start out with checking all the basics.......Simple stuff that can really kill your mileage....One is the tires...an under inflated tire can really drop your mpg. The correct tire, size & wheel Alignment are very important......All these being off create more resistance which in turn requires more power to overcome.

Idling......this is when you get 0 mpg.......The more you idle the more you drop your mpg.....If it's cold & you have remote start....This is a feature you probably wouldn't want to give up but once again, this will drop your mpg and the longer you let it warm up the lower your mpg drops...

Some of the simplest stuff that can really effect mpg......gets overlooked for the higher end techie stuff....

Also fuel leaks need to checked out but usually you will have a gas smell if there is a leak

You never use the words "Hemi" and "fuel mileage" in the same sentence.

You really aren't that far off. If the rated mileage is 12, that means reality is 9-10 and that puts you only a little over 2MPG off.

2006 Jeep Commander 4WD 8 Cylinder, 5.7 Liter, Automatic 5-spd Number of Vehicles: 5 Average User MPG: 13.5 Range: 11 - 18 MPG Updated On: 01/07/2013 Average MPG State Driving Conditions Estimate Last Updated Stop & Go Highway 1 14.7 AZ 20% 80% 05/23/2008 2 18.0 MD 10% 90% 06/02/2008 3 11.0 KY 80% 20% 11/09/2009 4 12.8 AR 90% 10% 03/20/2012 5 12.7 DE 70% 30% 10/12/2012

This vehicle may have nothing wrong with it. Factor everything including use of ethanol in the fuel. If used where you are many vehicles will only benefit as poorly as 50% of the % of ethanol in real MPG. So it's a lousy filler to make a gallon measure a gallon but you are getting cheated.

As said and historically Hemi was a HP trick not so good at MPG or emissions which would take extra efforts to make clean. Already said is you have to factor every moment a vehicle isn't moving and engine running factor ZERO into that time with time it is moving.

So many things come into play. Perhaps we all should do like aircraft and talk about Gallons Per Hour instead of distance.

Whatever - In this case with it so new to you average out more than one fill up and you might find it is better than you think but don't expect it to be fuel efficient compared to a car or another type vehicle,

Re: HELP! 2006 Jeep Commander Sign In

id be happy with 12 even ten mpg but im getting 6 so theres an underlying issue i think, im wondering if its the thermostat or coolant temp sensor , maybe not allowing it to go into closed loop mode, meybe a shot in the dark, but unfortunatly i cant find anything wrong with it, just less then half the average milage of other engines of the same year and size?

Re: HELP! 2006 Jeep Commander Sign In

Agreed that is annoying low mileage. With no codes to help of wild over fueling this is tricky. Can't see back to all posts at once but an engine temp sensor that always thinks engine coolant is colder than it really is could be at fault but should set other codes too. If thermostat really is keeping engine temp under normal operating temps that would do it too as it would never think it warmed up.

Either just replace it or you should get dang close to engine's actual operating temp with an infrared thermometer aimed right at thermostat housing,

This is Winter. You're in Canada. All cars reduce mileage in winter and I suspect you are warming up before driving.

Those rating are not in the dead of winter and they are tested under controlled conditions. Don't buy a Hemi if you are concerned about fuel mileage.

Well, I'm in West Palm Beach Florida. Do you want to compare thermometers?
