HELP - ENGINE PROBLEM Sign In

I have a 57 plate Honda Accord 2.2CDTI - 80k miles on clock and no previous problems - serviced regularly - car developed a knocking sound in the engine on Monday and when taken to the garage, it appears to be v.low on oil - needed 3 litres.
Have had the engine taken apart on dealer recommendation and have been told that minimum cost of repair is £4500!!!! - I had no low oil light warning and seems to be a lot of damage caused.
Have taken to a dealer but understand they are the most expensive - as not a car person, is there any questions that I should be asking or any recommendations from anyone as to what to do next - is there a cheaper way to repair?????

HELP!!!!!!!!
