My '98 Escort's been getting harder and harder to start (3-4 tries on average). Finally last week even after I got it going it would idle for a few seconds then die. At the time I didn't think about trying to listen for the fuel pump. The next time I turned it over rather than let it idle I put it right in gear and started going. That worked well, and it drove fine (as it always does). Since it was going I took it straight to the shop. They told me they tested the fuel pump and it had to be replaced. I also agreed to a new filter, since it had never been changed before. When I went to pick it up they told me they dropped in a new battery too, although they didn't clear that with me in advance. I knew that my old battery was kind of weak, so I didn't object. About $740 total (including a new $40 tail light cover). It started on the first try there at the shop, but since then it's been just as hard to start as ever (it just cranks more powerfully with the new battery, but still takes at least 2-3 tries). It idles fine. I don't know what to do now.

I’d say go back and get them to recheck the thing; not so much that they did anything wrong but maybe the new pump is defective? Dan. Canadian "EH"

Just a comment on defective new parts: Has happened way too much to me and it makes it hard to figure out. I find myself buying more NEW parts than rebuilts when possible and seem to do better with the defect rate. Costs more though, T

Has the ignition system been checked? A weak coil, ignition module, or pickup can cause excessive crank times. Also, I recommend doing a KOEO self test to see if a sensor may be out of range. Also, check the tune-up parts. Brittle and dried out wires can leak ignition voltage to the engine block rather than to the coil. A lot of variables here.

check to see if your car has an etc sensor, if so when it malfunctions it tells your computer the car is to cold or to hot, will make car hard to start. cheap and easy to fix.
