Heater blower motor

I have a 1997 GMC K1500 Suburban. I switch my fan speed from high down 1 notch and back and forth. I heard a clicking sound in the blower motor area. The fan would not come on. I left it on high. After a while it came on...then stopped....then on again a while later. It has no even timing for the on and off...it is just sporatic. What can cause this? Winter is coming and I need my blower. Any help would be appreciated. It is the oddest thing. I did hear a clicking noise when I turned the switch but the fan did not come on.

The next time it happens, give the blower motor a good rap with a screwdriver handle and see if it starts up. If it does, the motor is bad. If not, test to see whether it's power or ground missing from the motor.
