Help Please Toyota Celica 51 Sign In

Hi,
General History, I own a Toyota Celica 51 plate 1.8. It has a high milage of 160,000 but has been ok so far. The engine light came on about a month ago and it just needed an oil top up. I reset this by discon the battery and it stayed off. It came back on about a week ago. checked fluids and all seem fine.
This morning as i turned on the car quite a loud whining noise came from the car, this was at idle, it sounded like it was coming from the front of the car. I drove about 0.1 miles from my girlfriends to my house and noticed the noise was louder the more i turned the wheel, both directions. I got home and opened the bonnet, on a look at the engine when idle it sounded louder where the engine block is at the front there are some big black pipes leading in, about 4 i think? it is defo louder if i turn the wheel. any help would be great.
Thanks
Steve
If you could tell me what it possibly is and roughly how much you think it would cost at a normal garage price or if it is easy to do myself. However I struggle with most things to do with cars!

Don't have the exact car here where most of us are so basics only.

Noise when steering is likely low fluid level meaning the PS fluid. If that is low find the leak right away or if not already more damage is impending. Engine oil low but in range might set off a "low oil" type warning usually those are amber, red warnings usually mean impending serious problems or damage.

Check ALL fluid levels again. Pay attention to any found low and find out why. Some minor engine oil consumption could be normal and you should be checking it manually not waiting for warnings. If the light was to indicate a trouble code it needs to be read/scanned and don't reset it as you are losing valuable information.

? Not sure a PS issue will trigger a warning so there may be two issues going on with this,

Thank you for the reply, would the PS fluid being low cause this noise? it is loud and happens when im not turning too or even moving, I will check these again after work. (6 hours)
The stearing also isnt heavy, I believe this would be a common symptom of low fluid? The steering feels fine.

Yes, low fluid will make usually a buzzing sound worse when steering but can just plain running. It will work to a point but if low making bubbles/foam and if because it's low will wreck the pump and more if not at least kept filled till fixed if slow enough.

If is the word. It could make noise and fluid be full but just gone bad. Fix unknown unless obvious if a leak. Snug up a clamp on up to expensive parts. Try to get some PS fluid in it if found low before heading out at all and be ready underway,

Re: Help Please Toyota Celica 51 Sign In

Again! If it needs topping up there is a problem! You said you were at work so guess not near where you can get fluid if needed.

You can check it without even starting it. If VERY low I don't suggest even driving it to get more as it might just pour right out instantly?? Can't know that without a look.

Some leaks may not show at all like ones at rack and pinion if leaking into boots there. If remote tank it could have a crack. Anything to do with PS fluid is possible at this point.

Trouble is when run low generally you get some noise first then lose power assist. Pump is being damaged by then. Debris could get thru now other good parts such that only replacing them would correct. Domino effect of troubles. Not to frighten you but a totally failed PS pump could throw the belt and the car can't be driven so be ready for that if you drive it or tow it to where it can be dealt with hoping it's simple now still,
