I just bought this car I haven't even owned it for 4 months!!! A couple of weeks ago my car started acting up.. It sputtered I tried to step on the gas it wouldn't go.. The it died it did it three times that day.. I put super unleaded gas in and heat treatment. In case maybe water got in my gas tank.. After that it ran fine. And just recently I went to start it, it started 2secs later it died. It wouldn't start again next day my bro gets underneath the car hits the gas tank it starts then dies did it again it started and its been running ever since.. But i dont want it to break down for good. IS it my fuel pump or filter???? Please help

This is a total guess and gamble with it working right now. In that hitting the tank worked it does suggest the fuel pump or possibly the wiring connections to it. If you replace it do a fuel filter for good measure. Only time without trouble will really tell if that was it, T

I know but... I don't want to take it to anyone of my mechanics in this area they aren't very good at all and they rip you off.. I have family that can fix it but should I go ahead and replace the fuel pump..

If you have family that can fix it, why do you want us to know the mechanics in your area are bad? Statements like that are irrelevent to the repair. If hitting the tank makes the pump run, 95% of the time it is the fuel pump that is bad. Just don't run down mechanics in your area. There has to be one good one somewhere close to you. Good luck with the repairs. Being way2old is why I need help from younger minds

Reminds me of a 2000 contour I worked on the other day. Intermittent starter. The starter relay has a full time hot wire from the battery, a hot wire activated by the ignition switch and a ground from the neutral safety switch. When I shook the gear shift the ground from neutral safety would go in and out. Explained to the customer they needed a neutral safety switch. She declined repair, saying her brother would fix it.Then I tried to charge a diagnostic fee... but I'll save that story for later. I know this has nothing to do with the fuel pump problem but it does touch on the family thing. God forbid I charge for diagnostic fee.
