Hoist Sign In

Hi Folks,

This is a general question for people doing work at home without a hoist. What is the best way that you found to lift a vehicle? I need to reach the back sparkplugs on a ford minivan and a set of regular jack stands make it pretty difficult to reach. Anybody using extend jack stands or other solution to SAFELY lift a vehicle without a hoist?

Thanks,
Mark

Re: Hoist Sign In

You're probably asking the wrong people about that. We are mostly professional techs here and use professional lifts. We rarely try anything like that on the ground.

Re: Hoist Sign In

Most owner's manuals will describe lifting spots for basic tire changing. Not handy for real work.

ALWAYS USE SAFETY STANDS AND NEVER COUNT ON JUST THE JACK! Level solid surface, cement is best. Where to place jack stands without damage takes some understanding of the strong places such that no harm will be done.

Avoid ramps even though popular I hate them. Avoid pressed steel jack stands too as I've seen them collapse. You might actually save by just getting back 3 plugs done for you professionally vs buying a ton of stuff to do this right even if on your back,

Re: Hoist Sign In

take the wiper cowel out and you should be able to change the back plugs on the ground.
