I have a 93 ford taurus 3.8L V6 4dr. sedan. What is the procedure for removal of the oil pump on my car? Do you have to remove the timing cover?

Here are the OEM instructions

1. If necessary, remove oil filter.
2. Remove oil pump cover attaching bolts and remove cover.
3. Lift pump gears off pocket in front cover.
4. Remove cover gasket and discard.

Inspection of Pump Cover Flatness

1. Remove all traces of seal material from pump cover.
2. Place a straightedge across mounting surface of pump cover and measure for wear or warpage using a feeler gauge.
3. If surface is out of flat by more than O.O4mm (0.0016 inch) replace cover.

Assembly

1. If necessary, remove pump gears from cover.
2. Lightly pack gear pocket with petroleum jelly or coat all gear surfaces with Oil Conditioner D9AZ-19579-CA (ESR-M99C80-C) or equivalent.
Do not use chassis lubricants.
3. Install gears in cover pocket. Ensure petroleum jelly fills all voids between gears and pocket.

Caution: Failure to properly coat the oil pump gears may result in failure of the pump to prime when engine is started.

4. Position cover gasket and install pump cover.
5. Tighten pump cover attaching bolts to 25-30 Nm (18-22 ft-lbs).

Is their anyway to test your oil pump to see if it has gone bad?

Not really, You can look at the oil pressure reading but worn main bearings will also give you low oil pressure. So will a restricted pickup screen.

Heavy oil, obstruction in the system or stuck pressure relief valve.

What is the pressure relief value purpose and where is it located on my 93 taurus?
