Ignition switch wont turn off car
1995 Mercury Grand Marquis 4.6 engine aprox. 154,000 miles I recently had a local mechanic work on the shift tube/linkage and he tightened up the slop in the shifting selector but since then the chime tone sounds even with the key out until the door is closed. The much bigger problem is that tonight the ignition switch ceased being able to shut the car off! the switch will still start the car but when you try to turn it off the switch moves unrestricted past all the normal clicks and such and doesn't shut the car off. I've searched for the problem online and have herd mention of a link between the ignition tumbler and the switch but I haven't been able to find anything definitive about my problem.

Sounds like you may have a couple of things going on here.. There is a rod that goes between the key switch & actual ign sw that may have come off or broke. As far as the chime, a common problem on those the key cyl will ground all the time (thinking there is a key in) and go off... It may or may not be related to the repairs......Definitely take it back & have them look at it....But realize this is a 17-18 year old car...Dash work, column work, etc.....anything with plastic & small pieces, there is always a risk of pieces breaking that isn't tech error..... Any shop I've been at.....If the tech breaks it, the repair is free.....If it broke on its own, the parts are at cost with minimal labor....

Thanks Sidom, I wasn't trying to place blame but rather thoroughly explain what has led up to this most recent problem. Your response has given me some understanding of the problem so I can talk with some small degree of intelligence about the problem I've encountered. BigJohn

Have the same problem now on the same car. If the rod was broken or off wouldn't the car not start? It's the rod that acuates the ign sw. Is it maybe in the key lock cylinder?

This is an old thread so more than likely John has got a handle on this problem.... Yes in most cases when that rod breaks, you will get a no crank problem......Since work had just be performed in that area it's anyones guess to whether something just broke on it's own or something got messed up.... If you are looking for advise on your problem, then it would be best to start a new thread.....Multiple posters in one thread gets too confusine...
