Inside tire wear Sign In

2002 Chevy Venture 3.4 L FWD

I was putting the front tires back on after finishing up the tranny and noticed the inside of both tires are worn smooth. Maybe an inch wide strip or so. I can't remember exactly how many miles these tires have but maybe around 15-20k or so. Awhile back I had an a-arm completely break so was thinking that might've been the cause but both tires are worn exactly the same. I know I have rotated them at least once but think I have twice. They're do for it now. Do you think I can just throw them on the back and they'll be okay or should I get new tires? I can post some pictures of them if it will help.

Thanks!

I can't speak for how safe the tires are but it sounds like you have a "toe-out" condition and maybe a little low on aire too which will roll the tire slightly.

Re: Inside tire wear Sign In

Thanks HT. I looked them over a little closer and can barely see the wire tips of the steel belts! Looks like that rebuilt tranny is going to be turning some new tires. Well, hopefully. I haven't put it into gear yet to try the tranny. I'm too damn nervous! I'm usually pretty good at checking tire pressure whenever I fill up with gas but have never been in the habit of closely looking over the tires. I'd glance at them but never checked the whole tire over. Looks like I'm going to start a new habit though! Do you think an alignment should take care of it? It has been about 5 years since I last had it aligned. What would cause a toe out problem on both sides? I can understand hitting a curb or something it just seems odd that both sides are worn exactly the same. Then again, I don't know squat about it. The last time I did or learned about aligning a vehicle was in shop class in high school.

Yes, alignment for sure. If you have any speed bumps in your area, they are known for doing that to a front end.

Re: Inside tire wear Sign In

Sounds good HT.

Before the a-arm broke I don't know how long there was a hairline crack in it before it finally went. One day my wife complained saying the steering "felt weird" and that's when I found it. It wasn't a weld that cracked. It cracked right in the solid piece of the a arm. It kind of makes me wonder if she drilled something and just didn't say anything. Maybe something like that threw it off. I don't see her not telling me but she is a woman so who knows.

The rear tires still have probably have around 75% tread so I'll probably just pick up two tires. Not sure why but I hate not replacing all four though but hate to because they aren't that old. I said they had 15-20k but it might be less than that. I'm going to dig out the receipt tomorrow.
