Intermittent starting problems 93 Chev Beretta Sign In

I've had this problem for several years with this 93 Chevrolet Beretta but recently it's gotten worse. Car usually starts as usual. I can always tell when this is going to happen when I try to start the car and there is a soft whining noise before it starts. 99% of the time, when I turn the car off and try to start it again it won't start...just does that soft whining noise and the radio and lights and everything else works. Then the whining stops after about 3 or 4 tries. After the car sits for awhile it always starts. However, this problem is getting progressively worse and I am getting stranded several times a week. Please help. I have new spark plug wires and plugs, starter is about 2 years old, have had several fuel injecters changed recently. This is a 2.2 liter. Knocking on the starter with a metal or wooden stick does not work. I just came from picking up my car...let it sit for about 2 hours and it started normally....this will go on for about 8 to 15 starts and a slight whining noise will happen when it starts..the next time, it won't. I believe the soft whining noise is the fuel pump engaging. Fuel pump was changed about 6 years ago and when it went out the car would not start at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
